Shinai is a practice weapon for kendo. This practice weapon is a representation of a Japanese sword. This sword can also be used for other kinds of martial art with different style and different characters. The word “shinai” is from the verb “shinau” which means “to bend, or to flex.” It used to be called shinai-take, which means flexible bamboo. In kendo, you only use one shinai; this is called the itto style. There are other kendoka that uses two shinai; this is called ni-to style. This swordsmanship of using two shinai comes from the two-sword school of Hyoho and Niten Ichi-ryu. The daito is a long shinai used by a ni-to combatant. This is usually held using the left hand. The shorter shinai is called Shoto and is held using the right hand. The International Kendo Federation rules are used during kendo competitions. This sword was developed during the 70s. It is made up highly polished and well-seasoned bamboo staves. To keep the staves aligned, a small square piece of metal is welded inside the rear of the shinai. The tips are separated by a T-shaped rubber grommet and are covered by sakigawa. To keep the staves from spreading apart in the middle, a nakayuki is placed around it and a tsuka, which also serves as the handle. The leather piece is bound together by the himo string. It also indicates the blunt single-edge sword represented by the shinai. The tsuba, also known as the guard, is made up of plastic or whale skin. A rubber grommet or tuba home holds it together. The shinai has many different sizes and style. Different sizes are necessary because there are shinai that adults can carry but children cant. A bokotu is a single wood sword that also represents a Japanese sword, but a shinai is not a bokotu. However they are both used in kendo. Dried bamboo is used to create the slats of the shinai. Smoking them and soaking them in resin are some methods of treating the shinai. Shinai slats are composed of carbon fiber or resin. If the shinai is not taken care of properly, it may be dangerous to the user and other people near it. Breaks and splinters in the shinai may cut the people using the sword. The shinai must be checked if it has splinters or breaks before it is used. Oiling and sanding the shinai is one way of taking care of the shinai. This must be done before it is used and periodically. If it is not used, it is rested against the wall and the handle must be pointed downwards to the ground. It is very disrespectful if you step on or over it. Shinai are not just used for the purpose of sport. There is something more cultural and spiritual in the shinai sword. It represents the sword that defended the Japanese during the old days. The shinai sword must be treated with respect and you must feel honored if you are using one.
